Obituary

Douglas Ivan Hill passed away on September 10, 2026, in Garden City, Michigan. He was born on November 13, 1943, in Buffalo, New York, and lived a life marked by service, perseverance, faith, and devotion to family.

Douglas attended Belleville High School and graduated in 1962. He went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Corporal and worked as a combat engineer and bridge builder. During his military service, he earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After his time in the Marines, he built his career as a drafting designer in the automotive industry.

He found deep meaning in community and fellowship. Douglas was involved in the AA program and the North American Indian Association of Detroit, and one of his proudest accomplishments was 34 years of sobriety. He enjoyed attending AA meetings, going to church, and spending time with his grandkids and family. He also loved taking walks with his dog, Scrappy.

Above all, Douglas cherished his family. He is survived by his brother, David; his sons, Craig (Davina) and Daniel; and his daughter, Sara. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Anthony, Zachary, Annalycia, and Jacob (Domnique). The love he shared with his children, grandchildren, and extended family will be remembered with gratitude and affection.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edmund Hill, known to many as “Uncle Chuck”; his mother, Roberta Hill; his sister, Cindy Desbien; and his son, Douglas Jr. Their memories remained part of his life and story, and he is now reunited with those who went before him.

Visitation for Douglas will be held on September 16, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at The Husband Family Funeral Home, 2401 S Wayne Rd, Westland, Michigan 48186. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the US Marine Corps and the AA program. It truly saved his life.

Rest well our beloved Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend. You'll forever be missed. You are always deep within our hearts. After 34 years in the AA program you have touched and changed so many lives. The world will not be the same without you in it. Rest in Peace old man.

Douglas will be remembered for his strength, his steady commitment to recovery, his service to others, and the joy he found in family, faith, and simple daily moments. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.
