Franklin Vail, Jr.

d. January 8, 2024

Franklin William Vail Jr, 76, of Westland, MI, passed away on January 8th, 2024 in the comfort of his home.

Franklin was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to Franklin Sr. and Mamie Vail on July 25th, 1947.  He went to high school at Romulus High School and received his diploma in 1976.

Frank was preceded in passing by his father Frank Vail Sr., his mother Mamie Vail, his brother Joe Vail.  He is survived by his sisters Carol Bell and Sandy Kowalski; 3 daughters, Michelle Vail, Lana Mecca, Lori Preis; 1 son, Matthew Vaughan-Vail; 9 granddaughters, Jordan Bixby, Angela Hunter, Skylar Preis, Adalyn Vaughan-Vail, Cassandra Vail, Kayla Thorson, Kensley Preis, Michelle Shea, Stephanie Mecca, Jenny Miller; 3 son-in-laws, Scott Mecca, Robert Preis, Peter Vaughan-Vail; 2 sister-in-laws, Cindy Hitland, Joy Andrykovich and stepmother Jackie Ritchey.

Frank was a father, grandfather, brother, son, colleague, coach, mentor, musician, storyteller and a cousin to all.  Frank enjoyed his dogs, cars, church, sports, and his faith. But family was Frank’s top priority, and together with his late wife inspired their children and grandchildren to study and work hard to pursue their dreams.  He was immensely proud of all of his children and grandchildren and could speak endlessly about all of them.

Frank always wanted to bring joy to people.  He would pull over a block away from family holiday gatherings, put on a Superman costume over his clothing, and “fly” into the party and around the house to announce our arrival.  He shared his music gift with the world, singing and playing guitar at his church, retirement communities, and open mics throughout the area. The stories Frank shared ("I'll tell ya what...") about his family and countless "cousins" brought smiles to all of us. He blessed this world with his simple and loving nature during his time on earth, and so many of us were lucky to have known and loved him.

*The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Plymouth Church of the Nazarene.  In lieu of flowers, our family welcomes you to donate to the National Cancer Society at https://www.cancer.org/donate.html.
