Fred R. Ring

d. July 15, 2023

Fred Russell Ring, 93, of Westland, MI passed away July 15, 2023.

Fred Ring was born in Union City, Tennessee to James Preston Ring and Myrtle (McGee) Ring on April 4, 1930.

He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 16. By the age of 17 he was serving in Germany. Fred was a member of the Big Red 1, a fact he remained proud of all his life. After the Army he returned to Union City, TN.

In 1951 he married Alice McMullen. Shortly afterwards they moved north to Michigan where Fred went to work for GM in 1952. He became a member of UAW local 735. He was a strong union man and was proud to be a UAW member for 71 years. 2 of his children followed him into GM to work and also became active UAW members just like their father.

Fred enjoyed horseback riding, motorcycles, raising rabbits, chickens and guinea pigs in addition to his beloved cats; Sylvester and Charmin and his many hunting dogs. He and Alice loved having family, friends and neighbors over to eat and play card games, Chinese checkers, Aggravation, Croquet and many others. Their door was always open and there was always an empty chair at their table for whomever came along.

In his seventies, Fred took up writing and became a published poet.

Fred loved the Lord and always spoke of how good He had been to him and his family. The services will be officiated by Rocky Barra, Pastor of Connection Church in Canton where Fred and Alice often attended.

Fred is survived by his children; Darlene (Mike) Rorabacher, Shirley Poling and Russ (Sherrie) Ring, grandchildren; Kathy (Alan) Yost, Vicki Deel, Melinda Powell, Elizabeth Kelley, Brian (Carrie) Poling, Nathan (Nicole) Ring, Alicia (Porfirio) Montes and Brad Rorabacher; 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson as well as his siblings J.W.
