John Edward Birkenhier Jr. was born on October 16, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, and spent his life forging deep connections and creating cherished memories. He passed away on July 19, 2025, in Taylor, Michigan, leaving behind an indelible mark on the hearts of his beloved family and friends.
A proud veteran, John served in the Army, embodying a spirit of service and dedication that resonated throughout his life. He was a man of many passions, finding immense joy in fishing, camping, and watching sports, but above all, he relished the moments he spent with his family. From his childhood experiences camping with his parents and siblings, which he later cherished sharing with his own children and grandchildren, John cultivated a love for the great outdoors that brought smiles and laughter to those closest to him.
Fishing excursions with his three sons, John, Ronald, and Keith, were particularly special times, shared in the picturesque settings of Port Austin and Grindstone City, where laughter flowed as freely as the waters of the lakes they fished. John's warm heart and joyful spirit extended beyond just his immediate family; he was a loving husband to Diana Birkenhier, the love of his life, whose companionship he treasured deeply.
As a devoted grandfather, John’s light shone brightly in the lives of his grandchildren—Chelsea, Breanna, Blake, and Bradley—and great-grandson, Kourtney Wickham. He embraced these roles with enthusiasm, often engaging them in joyful adventures, fostering a sense of wonder, and imparting wisdom that would last a lifetime.
John is also remembered fondly by his brother, Donald Birkenhier, who shared childhood memories filled with play and exploration. He was preceded in death by his father, John Alexander Birkenhier, mother, Geraldine Virginia (Avendt), and sister, Rose Anne LaFata, all of whom he remembered with love and respect.
John's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the friends and relatives who have offered their unwavering support and love throughout the years.
A memorial service to honor his life will take place on July 26, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Wayne, Michigan, where family and friends will gather to celebrate the remarkable journey of a man whose spirit and love will continue to resonate in the lives of those he touched.
John Edward Birkenhier Jr. will forever be remembered for his kindness, joy, and the profound love he shared with family and friends—an enduring legacy of devotion that will live on in the hearts of many.
