John Edward Birkenhier Jr.

John Edward Birkenhier, Jr. age 84 passed away on July 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. John was born on October 16, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to his late parents John and Geraldine (Avendt) Birkenhier.

John will always be remembered with much love by his beloved and devoted wife, of 58 years, Diana (née MacDonald) Birkenhier; loving father of 3 children — John Joseph Birkenhier, Ronald Birkenhier and Keith (Tracy) Birkenhier.

Proud and loving grandpa of Chelsea, Breanna, Blake, Bradley and Brandon — and great grandpa to Courtney.

John is also remembered fondly by his brother, Donald Birkenhier who shared many memories with him. He is preceded in death by his sister Rose Anne LaFata. Dear uncle to several nieces and nephews.

John proudly served his country in the US Army. He retired after working for many years at GM providing for his family through his hard work and dedication. John liked watching sports and his game shows. He loved his wife and enjoyed a home cooked meal by Diana with his family. He enjoyed the outdoors; many fond memories of taking his sons on fishing trips, camping, and attending their extra-curricular activities and sporting events. He continued that tradition by attending as many of his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities as possible.

John will be deeply missed.

John will forever be remembered for his kindness, silliness and respect towards others.

A memorial service to honor John’s life will take place on July 26, 2025, at 9:30 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 34530 West Michigan Avenue, Wayne, Michigan until the time of the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
