Otis Rogers Barnett, also known as (Big O) was called home at the age of 89 on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at approximately 7:09 AM. He was born on August 31, 1931 in Uhrichsville, Ohio to the late Ivory and James Barnett. He graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1949. After graduation, Otis served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was the third youngest of seven siblings, Pete, Margorie, Melvin, James, Charles and Charlene. Charles Barnett is the last living sibling.
Otis was strong in his faith, accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a very early age. He lived his life with a strong moral conviction and raised his family to love and serve the Lord. Otis was proud to be a part of the faithful family of St. Paul United Methodist Church where he nurtured his faith.
He relocated to Detroit in 1958. On July 31, 1963 he was united in holy matrimony to Earlie Marie Barnett until her untimely death in 2001. This union raised a family of four children, Tonja, Gregory, Terri and Gordon.
At an early age, Otis was instilled with a strong work ethic. He was employed and retired from the United States Post Office as a Postal Police Officer and a Manager at Sears & Roebuck.
“Big O” is most remembered for his lovable personality and witty sense of humor. He lived life to the fullest. He was a member of the Amicci Whisk Club, a square dancer, an avid bowler, traveler, and indisputably the best card player. He was indeed a socialite. Never missing an opportunity to gather with loved ones for a celebration. He loved kicking it with his beloved grandchildren Clinton and Tamika and his Appoline family while chilling on the front porch. Living, loving and enjoying each day was his favorite pasttime. There was never a dull moment with “Big O”.
He leaves to cherish his memory, 8 children, Roger, Tonja, Gregory (Kim), Terri (Curlee), Alison, Gordon (Denise), Tracie and Lynette; one brother Charles Barnett (Shirley); two brothers-in-law Gerald and Daniel; one sister-in-law Beverly. He also had 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grands; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
With fond memories of a beloved father, grandfather, uncle and a true friend, you will be missed by all. Your loving heart will always live within us. The memories we will cherish...your smile and your wit is something we will never forget!
