Neijla Lewis

Neijla Lewis, Age 60, of Inkster, MI passed away August 9. 2019.

Neijla Lewis was born July 17, 1959 to the union of James and Evelyn Lewis at Annapolis Hospital in Wayne, Michigan. After graduating from Inkster High School in 1977, she attended cosmetology school and obtain her cosmetology license. She worked at Unique’s Unisex Salon and also provided hair services in her home. Neijla was best known for her press and curl styles she had a natural gift for doing hair. Neijla also further her education by studying Occupational Therapy and Business Administration at Wayne County Community College.

Neijla began working at Johnson Controls in the mid 1990’s, starting as a line member then working her way up to Human Resources Department. Over the years Neijla’s coworkers became more like family due to her warm and loving spirit. Neijla also worked as the Activities Director at Transitional Health Services of Wayne, extending her love of caring for people to the members of the nursing home.

Nay Nay, as her family and friends call her, enjoyed spending time with loved ones. She shared a special bond with her parents and siblings; Duane, Lisa, James Jr. and Bryant. Neijla also had many friends who were like family. She formed a sisterhood with some of her close friends, they referred to themselves as The Angels.

On October 17, 1984, Neijla gave birth to her only child, Derrick. Her pride and joy, the love they had for each other was paramount. Neijla’s wish for a grandchild was finally granted in 2017 when her grandson Derrick Jr. or D2, as she called him, was born. She loved him dearly and was so proud to be a grandmother.

Neijla loved to travel and had been to many places, St. Lucia being her favorite. Shopping, getting dressed up for special occasions, going out to eat and cooking were some of her favorite things to do. Neijla was very loving and always and willing to lend a helping hand. You could always depend on her to be there when you needed her most. Neijla’s nurturing spirit and big heart made it easy for her to make friends with many people she encountered.

Neijla leaves to cherish her beautiful memory; her son Derrick; her grandson Derrick Jr.; her mother Evelyn; her brothers Duane, James Jr. (Regina) and Bryant (Karen); her sister Lisa and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, many close friends, and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her father James Sr.
